Presenter: Ellary (Spiezer) Makuch ’99, Planner III, City
of Houston, Texas.
Starting
over in a new city is difficult, especially if you are leaving a professional
reputation behind. Ellary will discuss important networking tips (hint,
in-person is still just as important as emails!), how to get settled and look
for a job if necessary. How do you begin networking and meeting people in a new
city? What kinds of events and activities contribute to your networking? How do
you build connections, personally and professionally? How do you follow up and
make sure you stay on new acquaintances' radar? All of these will be addressed
so you can get established in your new community.
Ellary
Makuch earned a BA in Sociology from Ithaca College and a Master of Urban
Planning from the State University of New York at Buffalo. From 2008-2016 she
worked for the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning in the
housing section, and the Town of Amherst as Community Development Director. In
2016, Ellary relocated from Amherst NY, to Houston, TX. Having left all
connections behind in Buffalo, Ellary set about building a professional network
and finding employment at a similar professional level. She currently works for
the City of Houston Housing & Community Development Department in grants
management and disaster recovery. Ellary is currently a Planner for the City of
Houston, Texas.
